İngilizcede “be supposed to” yapısı, kişinin yapması gerektiği ama yap(a)madığı şeyleri ifade etmek için kullanılmaktadır. Konu anlatımına ilk olarak geniş (present) ve geçmiş (past) zamanda olumlu, olumsuz ve soru cümlelerinde nasıl kurulduğu ile başlayalım.

❗️İngilizcede “was/were supposed to” kalıbı, kişinin yapması gerektiği ama yapamadığı veya mücbir sebeplerden yapmadığı şeyleri ifade etmek için kullanılıyor. Buna karşılık “had to” ise, kişinin yapması gerektiği ve bundan dolayı yaptığı şeyleri ifade etmek için kullanılır.
“Be supposed to” Hangi Durumlarda Kullanılır?
1. Bir işin yapılması gerektiği bildirildiğinde kullanılır. Bu gereklilik, yapılması gereken bir şeyin henüz yapılmadığını ima eder:
🇺🇸 The game was supposed to conclude at six o’clock.
🇹🇷 Maçın saat altıda bitmesi gerekiyordu. (ama bitmemiş)
🇺🇸 You are supposed to wear a seatbelt in the car.
🇹🇷 Arabada emniyet kemeri takmanız gerekiyor. (henüz takmamış)
🇺🇸 I’m supposed to be at school right now.
🇹🇷 Şu an okulda olmam gerekiyordu. (ama okulda değil)
2. Yapılmaması gereken işleri ifade ederken kullanılır:

🇹🇷 Burada olmaman lazımdı/gerekiyordu.
🇺🇸 You weren’t supposed to wash the dishes.
🇹🇷 Bulaşıkları senin yıkamaman gerekiyordu/lazımdı.

3. Planlanmış işleri ifade ederken kullanılır:

🇹🇷 Talk-show’un 22.00’de başlaması gerekiyordu/bekleniyordu. (ama başlamamış)
4. Genel olarak doğruluğu kabul edilmiş yargıları ifade ederken kullanılır:

🇹🇷 Daha yüksek bir faiz oranının yerel yatırımları ve tüketici harcamalarını kısıtlaması bekleniyor.
